3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama. The Historic Theatre and Retail District
Appleseed took what was once the old Jaymark Jewelry building and transformed it into a two-story live/work space. There are four residences on the second story, while the the two work spaces reside on the main level. It is the first mixed-use development within the theatre district.
|About the Project|
|Opportunities||The team at Appleseed had the rare opportunity to create an architecturally significant structure that complemented the historic theatre district of 3rd Avenue North. In traditional Appleseed style, the team made every effort to reuse as many existing building materials as possible in the nearly 100 year old building; this included such items as the original heart pine wood flooring and rustic brick walls. To create the signature corten steel facade on the southern face of the building, Appleseed first had to remove years and layers of existing building material. They were then able to restructure the entire front of the building with a light gage steel wall.|
|Specialties||As mentioned, the corten steel facade on the southern face truly allows this building to stand out among the stately structures that already surround it. In effort to pay homage to its surroundings, Appleseed patterned the steel facade from the molding design on the historic Lyric Theatre.|
