Renovating an 80-year-old 2800 square foot building in Birmingham’s Central Business District is no easy task, but Appleseed was up to the challenge. They turned this two story archealogical dig into a timeless two bedroom, two and a half bath loft. With large store-front windows, original exposed brick, and custom staircase, this loft is teeming with character. A relaxing roof top deck is secluded in the shadows admist the towers of its neighboring buildings.
|About the Project|
|Opportunities||The uniqueness of this building is in its 25 foot width and 50 foot depth. Very few properties in the downtown area meet these small parameters, making it an ideal space for a residence. The challenges of this project were two-fold: budget and location. In an effort to stay on budget, Appleseed used as much of the existing structure as possible. Original hardwood flooring and brick walls were repaired and restored while old wallpaper and plaster were preserved and displayed as works of architectural art. The location proved a logistical challenge beyond anything Appleseed had encountered. Parking and demolition were riddled with difficulties, but in the end, surrounding residents came to admire and appreciate this addition to the urban fabric.|
|Specialties||The heart of this space is the towering switch-back staircase that runs through the center of the loft. Appleseed surgically removed elements of the flooring as well as the existing plaster ceiling to create this wood and steel spire.|
